Costumes are outfits that Shantae can change into to change her stats and abilities. The concept was first introduced in Shantae: Risky's Revenge for the iOS to promote Shantae: Half-Genie Hero's Costume Swap stretch goal. While some of these outfits adjust her playstyle, others are merely cosmetic.

Shantae's Outfits[]

Red Bedlah Attire[]

The primary default outfit of Shantae. Throughout many generations, she has been known for her pantaloons and her iconic hair. Each outfit is tailored to a specific game she appears in.

Blue Bedlah Attire[]

Like the red bedlah attire, The blue attire was created as a token of gratitude towards the fans who supported the game's kickstarter campaign.

Introduced in Risky's Revenge for the iOS. Shantae's hair is now braided and she now wears a blue seashell bra and an open loose stem stalk skirt. Her magic is doubled but now receives twice the amount of damage from enemies.[2]
Dancer costume redesign

The new design for the Dancer costume.

In the Director's Cut edition of the game, the Dancer costume features its own stand-alone mode called Magic Mode, in which Shantae wears the outfit for the entirety of the game. For the Director's Cut, the costume was redesigned, with a new crown that features the head of a cobra on the front and a new gold bra.

Snake Princess Attire[]

The royal princess variant to the Dancer costume.

A royal variant of Shantae's dancer outfit that she wears in Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. During her visit to Tan Line Island, Shantae gets mistaken by the locals for their Princess and is forced to wear the outfit. Rottytops, Risky Boots, and Sky also wear the outfit after ending up in the same situation. After the Tan Line Island arc ends, Shantae and the other girls regain their normal outfits, as the Princess outfits are not required for the rest of the game. Shantae briefly wears it, however, during a conversation with Sky in Scuttle Town where the latter asks her to promise that they'll never speak of it again.

Half-Genie Hero DLC[]

The "Ninja", "Officer Wagon", and "Beach" costumes are part of a premium DLC pack released for Half-Genie Hero. Each affect how Shantae plays differently.[3]

The "Jammies" costume was released as a free update for both the Standard and Ultimate editions of Half-Genie Hero.

Ninja[]

Gives Shantae additional speed, agility, and magic at the cost of defense. While wearing this costume, she wields a short sword, and she is able to throw shuriken, cling to walls for wall-jumps, and turn invisible for a short-range teleport.

Switchforce shantae

Officer Wagon[]

Based on the suit Patricia Wagon wears in WayForward's other game Mighty Switch Force!. This gives Shantae a ranged Pellet Gun attack, but she is unable to swim or crouch.

Beach Day[]

Gives Shantae greatly reduced defense, but grants various special moves, such as throwing a beach ball at foes and floating over obstacles with a bubble. Her health drains rapidly while wearing this costume, and she needs to collect sunscreen constantly in order to stay alive. An alternate blue variant of this outfit was included as an exclusive for the Ultimate Edition.

Hgh jammies shantae

Jammies[]

Shantae's normal gameplay is replaced with sleep-related themes like pillow fights, counting sheep, and sleeping on clouds.

Trivia[]

  • The Blue outfit is based on the original pitch for the SNES and PC. At the end of her adventure, her red outfit would turn a triumphant blue.[1]
  • The Jammies outfit makes a cameo during Shantae and the Seven Sirens' opening movie.
  • Shantae: Risky's Revenge's red attire profile is not the same as the red attire's in-game sprite, as Shantae's sprite has the addition of a black vest. The vest was added to her portrait artwork for Pirate's Curse.
  • Matt Bozon's yellow trims design was inspired by Patricia Wagon from Mighty Switch Force.
  • The Snake princess / Dancer attire is heavily inspired by 2 Space themed pop-culture hits: Deja Thoris ( Princess of Mars ) and Princess Leia ( Star Wars: Return of the Jedi ). Shantae herself even notes this in Shantae and the Pirates' Curse, remarking that she's "dressed like a space princess".
  • The bedlah attire is heavily influenced in Turkish dancers for their playful and energetic motifs.
  • KOU taking over as the lead artist for the Shantae series in 2012 marked the end of her iconic sleeves, which were replaced with larger wristguards from The Pirate's Curse onwards.
